Understanding Asbestos Abatement

Understanding Asbestos: What You Need to Know

Asbestos denotes a group of six naturally-occurring minerals made up of heat-resistant fibers. It was widely used in construction materials and everyday products until the 1980’s, due to its durability and insulation properties.

If your home was built before 1990, it may have asbestos-containing materials (ACM). Common locations include insulation, vinyl flooring, roof shingles, drywall, adhesives, and cement products.

Asbestos is generally not dangerous when intact. The risk arises when asbestos is disturbed or damaged, such as during renovation, repair, or demolition. Then, they release microscopic fibers into the air that can cause severe health issues when inhaled. Asbestos can cause mesothelioma and asbestosis, as well as increase your risk for lung cancer. Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the lining of the lungs or abdomen, and asbestosis is a chronic lung condition which causes scarring and breathing difficulties. Both are severe conditions that are almost always fatal.

Asbestos abatement is not a DIY project. It requires certified professionals who use specialized training and equipment to ensure safety, regulatory compliance, and thorough cleanup. The typical process includes inspection, containment, safe removal, disposal, and final clearance testing.
